What n8n actually is

  • packages/nodes-base v2.32.0 registers 440 nodes and 403 credentials (package.json on master, 21 July 2026)
  • packages/@n8n/nodes-langchain v2.32.0 registers 122 AI nodes and 38 credentials
  • Those AI nodes break down into 24 chat/LLM connectors, 24 vector stores, 12 embeddings, 10 tools, 9 memory nodes, 6 chains, 4 MCP nodes, 4 guardrails and 2 agents (Agent and OpenAiAssistant)
  • The Agent node landed on 29 November 2023 ('feat: Add AI tool building capabilities', PR #7336), with 140 commits on that path since

  • n8n counts an execution as 'a single run of your entire workflow. It doesn't matter how many steps are in the workflow or how much data it processes'

Limits and catches

  • Not open source. The Sustainable Use License v1.0 states: 'You may use or modify the software only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use.' The GitHub API reports the license as 'other' / NOASSERTION
  • Files with '.ee.' in the filename or '.ee' in the folder name fall outside that license and require an Enterprise license
  • From the n8n Help Center: 'If you intend to host and manage your clients' workflows and credentials within your own internal n8n instance, an Enterprise license would be required.' Helping clients set up their own instance stays fine without a commercial license
  • Forbidden: white-labelling, hosting n8n and charging people for access, or building products whose value comes substantially from n8n functionality
  • The Community Edition lacks SSO (SAML/LDAP), Projects, Environments, git version control, workflow and credential sharing, external secrets, log streaming, multi-main mode, and external binary storage
  • First start of a self-hosted instance asks you to create an owner account (name, email, password of at least 8 characters with a digit and a capital)
  • 1,409 open issues on 21 July 2026

What does n8n cost?

The Community Edition is completely free and self-hosted through Docker or npm. The n8n docs call it 'almost the complete feature set of n8n, except for the features listed here', and it carries no execution limit. Cloud has a temporary trial only, no permanent free tier.
