What Midjourney actually is

  • Four subscription tiers, all of them paid: Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega
  • Billing runs on GPU time, not on image count: 3.3 hours per month on Basic (200 minutes), 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro, 60 on Mega
  • Extra fast GPU time costs $4 per hour on every plan, and committing to a year takes 20% off the subscription, paid upfront for the full year
  • Relax mode is the unlimited lane, but it arrives in two steps: unlimited images from Standard, unlimited images and SD video from Pro
  • Concurrent jobs scale with the plan: 3 fast image jobs on Basic and Standard, 12 on Pro and Mega; video goes 1, 3, 6, 12
  • Repeat and permutation size goes 4, 10, 40, 40 jobs; the queue holds 10 jobs on every tier
  • A full web app on midjourney.com, no longer Discord only, with generation, editor, canvas and community browsing
  • Image-to-video: a still becomes a 5 second clip, extendable to 21 seconds, with Motion Control (--motion 1-10) for how much movement you want
  • Omni Reference (--oref) keeps a specific object or character consistent across generations
  • You can rate images to earn free GPU time, on every tier

Limits and catches

  • No free tier since 2023. The lowest entry is a paid $10 per month subscription, and there is no trial
  • Basic has no Relax mode at all, so once your 3.3 hours of fast time are gone you either buy more at $4 per hour or wait for the next month
  • Video on Basic is SD only. HD video starts at Standard, and unlimited Relax video only at Pro
  • Stealth Mode, which keeps your images and videos private, is on Pro and Mega only
  • Companies making more than $1,000,000 USD in gross revenue per year must be on Pro or Mega to use the output commercially
  • The annual discount requires paying the full year upfront, so the cheapest entry is $96 in one go rather than $8 a month

What does Midjourney cost?

No. Midjourney dropped its free tier in March 2023 after a wave of abuse. The entry point is Basic at $10 per month. There is a limited refund option if you stay under 20 GPU minutes, which is not enough to evaluate the tool properly.
