What ChatGPT Atlas actually is

  • Standalone desktop browser from OpenAI with a built-in ChatGPT agent that could browse, fill in forms, sign in to sites and download files on your behalf
  • Being replaced by browser-based agentic work inside ChatGPT and Codex, with the new ChatGPT desktop app as the route OpenAI points to for deeper agentic browsing
  • For lighter help while you browse, OpenAI points to the ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar, where available

Limits and catches

  • Atlas is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. After that date it may no longer open, browse, or support browser-based agentic workflows
  • Nothing migrates by itself: bookmarks, open tabs and browser history do not transfer automatically
  • Cookies and passwords can be exported to the ChatGPT desktop app, bookmarks to Chrome; cookies and active sessions cannot be imported into another browser
  • Atlas is being discontinued, so it will stop receiving the ongoing security maintenance a browser needs
  • ChatGPT conversation history is separate from Atlas browser data and stays in ChatGPT
